The Sunbury ferry has had a fantastic first year and has had more than 6000 passengers. What a boon for the area. This electric craft runs at weekends only from a specially made pontoon down the passage opposite the Riverside Arts Centre and takes you over to the Walton bank. There you can walk along the path to the pub, the local cafes on the path to Molesey, the sports centre, then take the ferry back again.
The ferry is run entirely by volunteers. They sport smart weatherproof jackets provided kindly by Halliford School, sporting the Sunbury ferry logo.
Daphne Clement has immortalised the ferry in a watercolour, copies of which were presented to Neil Huntingford and Simon Harris who were tireless lobbyists and support-ers of the ferry from concept to launch. Next year the ferry is planned to open at Easter and run through until the autumn. As long as there is demand, and the volunteers retain their smiley en-thusiasm, which we have no doubt will be the case.
There were so many people thanked by Cllr Vivienne Leighton, who heads the river Thames task force and who was also very much behind making this happen. Well done to you all and thank you from the community.
