Well, hopefully some of you may have seen some summer sun. May be the summer is just late. Let’s hope!
The recent months have seen an in-crease in bicycle theft, both from the street and from bur-glaries of garages. If you have a bike, especially if it is expensive, please consider registering it on bike register https://www.bikeregister.com/. We offer a free ser-vice of bike registration where you get a unique sticker code to put on your bike. You obtain a bike registration and marking at any of our Meet the Beat campaigns. Please al-ways lock your bike to something substantial using a decent lock that cannot easily be cut or broken. There are examples of how to keep outbuildings and garages more secure on the Surrey Police website at https://www.surrey.police.uk/cp/crime-prevention/protect-home-crime/secure-shed-garage/
Over the summer we have seen high levels of anti-social behaviour from youths. We have already put a number of measures in place, but we really do need more reporting and identification of individuals who may be causing the issues. This will enable us to serve ASB letters and work towards CBO’s if those concerned do not change their behav-iour. In ASB week, our teams were out every-where dealing with ASB and giving advice regarding electric scooters. In fact, we were so busy we seized 11 of them! Please remem-ber it is illegal to ride electric scooters in pub-lic areas and they can be seized by police.
We have also seen an increase in purse dipping. This is simply stealing purses and wallets from handbags and bags without the persons knowledge. Although prevalent main-ly in Staines Town Centre it is something to always be aware of and to take precautions against. Please ensure that you keep your bags zipped or closed shut so that hands cannot easily reach into your bags to take your mon-ey and valuables. If you use a rucksack, please ensure that you do not keep your wallet in an outer pocket. Consider using a chain to link your wallet when it is in your bag, or a purse bell to alert you if it moves. Often we give out free purse bells on our stands so look out for the Meet the Beat events coming to your area soon. They are normally advertised on Facebook on the Spelthorne Beat Pages.
It is really worthwhile connecting with us on Facebook as we have information about the latest trends and scams. You can also see what the teams are focussing on and how you may be able to get involved with some of our initiatives. You can also contact us easily through the Messenger service where we have a 24/7 response and it is often quicker than waiting on the non-urgent number.
