On August 5th, Charlie Adams will turn 100. A card from the Queen already stands on the bookshelf at his home in Maryland Way, sent to congratulate Charlie and Barbara on their diamond wedding anni-versary. But to mark the 100th birthday, Barbara decided she would rather Sunbury Matters marked the occasion. What an honour!
Charlie and Barbara moved to Sunbury in 1956. They purchased the first house built in Maryland Way (the last of the Berg roads to be built) and they have lived there ever since. Charlie worked for BA and built up a great career. In later years he has enjoyed meetings with Probus and maintaining his business connections. He was born in Southampton and has been a life long supporter of Southampton Football Club. Charlie and Barbara have two sons, both living overseas. One attended Hampton Grammar and the other went to Bishop Wand. It is occasions such as this that you keenly feel how difficult it is for families to be parted and unable to get together.
Barbara Adams was very active throughout her life in Sunbury and the area, a member of many clubs and groups, and she ran the car boot sale when it was at London Irish. She is a font of knowledge on antiques.
Sadly a celebration of the 100th birthday as such is not very likely. Charlie is now in a care home and not likely to come home. Living a long life is great if you have strength, health and desire. When you are ailing and life is lived in a limited fashion, it can be a difficult waiting game. We hope that our congratulations and best wishes for Charlie’s 100th birthday may bring a smile to his face and that friends and absent family will raise a glass to him.
