Local mum walking 1.5 million steps for Fragile X

Sunbury mum, Jackie Newman, has challenged herself to walk 1.5 million steps by Easter Sunday and as we went to print she had already surpassed 500,000 steps. She is aiming to raise £500 for The Fragile X Society. As an added bonus she is hoping also to lose an-other 10lb to reach her personal weight loss goal. She has already lost 35lb! Fragile X Syndrome has had an immense impact on her family. It is a condition that most of us will never have heard of. Fragile X Syndrome is a genetic condition and is the most common inherited cause of learning disabilities. It affects around 1 in 4000 boys and men, as well as 1 in 8000 girls and women. It is genetic and Jackie and her sister are both carriers. Jackie’s son Matt has full mutation Fragile X syndrome and moderate learning difficulties. It is a complex condition with many side effects. (For more information please go to https://www.fragilex.org.uk/). The challenge is even harder for Jackie as she suffers from tendonitis in her Achilles tendons which flares up with prolonged walking.

To make it a bit more of a challenge Jackie has just done DRY JANUARY!!! If you can help support her please do. Her page is https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/jackie-newman1
