Well done two young ladies for growing some super sunflowers. Little Summer Rose, aged 5 was the overall winner, but we also had to include this huge, but slightly faded beauty from Lucy. Her mum explains the battle of the sunflower v squirrel:
“Our growing attempts were thwarted by our local squirrel:
1) nibbled the very first leaves off one
2) climbed up and broke the stem of another before it flowered (but I cut it and popped it in a vase and the bud opened!)
3) broke another off at the base but a few roots were still intact so I rescued it and repotted and staked and it just about survived, head about to open tomorrow although no leaves
4) and another which did manage to bloom and start going to seed before Mr Squirrel again climbed and broke the stem off to eat the seeds!!!
The fun is in the growing, and if you get to see the wildlife enjoy the results, so be it! Wonderful to see these huge flowers and a couple of happy girls who have tended and cared for them.
