Daphne Clement – 50 Years of Watching Sunbury

Our very colourful and engaging local artist, Daphne Clement, long term Sunbury resident, has been recording scenes in Sunbury for many years. She has been persuaded to create a book as a record showing how places have changed, some stayed the same and how beautiful the village has been and still is. She worked in pen and ink in the early days (see sample below) before developing her very recognizable style in water colours.

Says Daphne “I first came to Sunbury when I was 10 years old in 1953, but only started drawing in about 1970 when the kids were small.

I joined Sunbury Art Group and learned to paint by being amongst the inspirational people I found there. When I retired in 1999 I decided to paint a couple of scenes of the village, turn them into cards and see if anyone liked them. Luckily for me…they did…..and I have now done nearly 100 different images of Sunbury, the river, other places on the Thames and the river wild life.”

Daphne’s book entitled “Sitting on the Corner Watching” will make a fabulous gift for anyone who treasures the village. As well as images, they record Daphne’s observations of places and areas as they have changed. Copies are £12 and are available from Skinners or direct from Daphne herself.
