Chloe, Fresh Fitness Manager gives you some helpful tips
After the chaos of Christmas where our daily routines are relaxed and indulgence takes its place, it’s no surprise that come January 1st, so many of us are left unable to reach unrealistic goals of being a healthier and happier ‘new you’. From the anxiety that comes from stepping into the gym or an exercise class for the first time, to forc-ing yourself to go for a run every day even though you don’t enjoy it, we’re setting ourselves up to fail without giving our-selves a chance!
We get it – life is becoming busier and busi-er, and it is getting harder to find some time for yourself. Luckily, you don’t have to face this overwhelm alone – here are some simple things you can do to be kind to yourself, and set yourself up to improve your health and happiness in the new year.
Set realistic goals
Setting personal goals is a great way for you to keep yourself accountable and moti-vated. Let’s customise them as much as we can – the more specific, the better! For ex-ample, instead of saying ‘I want to lose weight’, let’s say ‘I want to go down 2 dress sizes’. Try giving yourself a time frame for your goals – for example, ‘I want to go to the gym 3 days a week for a month’, and then re-evaluate after if this goal was achievable for you.
Understand your ‘Why’
Take some time to dig deeper into why you set the goals you do – this will help to keep you motivated on those days where you don’t have the energy. WHY do you want to lose weight? WHY do you want to feel better about yourself? WHY do you want to go to the gym 3 times a week? Write down your why, so you can remember this when your motivation is lacking.
Do movement that you enjoy
If you don’t want to run every day, you don’t need to! If you love doing sports, you can join a local club. If you love yoga, you can do yoga classes and low impact exer-cises. All movement is positive, and the more you enjoy what you do, the more like-ly you are to keep at it whenever you can, whether that be at home or in a fitness cen-tre.
Try something new – have fun!
Every now and then, it is great to get out of your comfort zone and try something new! If you have never tried an exercise class before, try coming along to meet some new people – you might surprise yourself with how much you enjoy it, and you will feel amazing for doing something you have never tried before.
Don’t forget to reward yourself!
Celebrate your wins, however big or small! If you complete your 3 weekly workouts, grab yourself a lovely coffee with a friend. If you tried a new class, bring a friend along next time! Treat yourself to a mas-sage or spa day – whatever it is you enjoy, give yourself some incentive to feel like you have achieved it!
