Some years ago we ran a piece on local lady Ann McCarthy, who runs a charity that supports a school and medical centre in rural Uganda. Ann is turning 80 on September 8th and she is still working hard. Can you help her celebrate and ensure the growth and future of her charity? Or get involved, which she would very much welcome.
There is a guest house where volunteers and other visitors can stay when going to Uganda Lodge for a “Holiday with a Difference”. You can help rural village children, at the same time as enjoying a safari and perhaps gorilla trekking. Ann tells us she went on such a trek, for what is definitely her last, in April and it was amazing.
There are nearly 500 children at the school. This is only possible through regular donations of about £10 a month to help pay teachers salaries and buy morning porridge and a hot lunch for every child. It is a hard time for many now, but imagine how much worse it is in rural Uganda.
Ann wants to raise sufficient money to complete building and open a training kitchen/restaurant for vocation students who cannot afford even government senior school education. Ann has set up a fundraiser with JustGiving: https://justgiving.com/page/ugandalodge-ann-80. A link is also on her Facebook page annmcc where she has been doing an 80 day countdown to her 80th. She has been adding one photo and a post each day
Ann plans to return to Uganda mid September until late November and welcomes hearing from anyone who might like to join her for some, or all of the time. The medical centre works with the local district hospital and the charity facilitates low cost placements for medical electives as well as volunteering for Gap Years and all ages.
