A grand opening of the new kitchen drew together the community, councillors and supporters at St Saviour’s church last month.
The investment in a new kitchen is not just about making life easier to support the com-munity. It is also about teaching basic cook-ing skills, taking simple inexpensive ingredi-ents (many can be picked up from surplus food supplied to St Saviour’s), and making wholesome and nutritious meals. A chef from the Jockey Club is going to be on site every month to teach. This will be life changing to many.
Surrey County and Spelthorne Borough Councillor Harry Boparai commented “In the 6th richest economy in the world, food banks should not exist. The St Saviour’s model rep-resents best practice. The team offer more than just a food bank. The team at St Sav-iour’s offer hope”.
The new kitchen was made possible partly through a donation from Surrey County Council, as well as the local franchise of McDonalds. The Jockey Club have been long term supporters of St Saviour’s and the team turned up en masse with trays of delicious food for the lunch. Surplus to Supper were present too and continue to donate surplus food every week, as well as ready prepared food for the community lunch.
St Ignatius primary school has long been in-volved in the lunches too, with children giv-ing up their lunch breaks to help serve and clear up, under the watchful eye of their teachers. One little girl said it made her feel good helping out.
The hall of St Saviour’s was buzzing. Cllr Boparai spoke warmly of the contribution the team of volunteers was making, saying he “felt the love and care for one another, sadly lacking in many corners of society. We need to bring it back”.
