Sunbury seems to have it’s fair share of aging rockers. Nothing seems to keep them down. You can often see them performing at the Sunbury Cricket Club’s Music Nights where they give it everything they have!
Well, old rocker Sunbury Richard Stephenson has recently featured on the BBC 2 show Rock Til We Drop. Richard started playing the guitar at boarding school. He has worked as an engineer for most of his life, including electronics for concord, hearing aid technology and mostly recently repair-ing industrial catering equipment. But at the age of 72, was his chance to really rock! His family had not heard him perform for years.
Rock Til We Drop is fronted by Spandau Ballet’s Martin Kemp and MOBO award winning grime artist Lady Leshurr. They want to show the world that when it comes to rock ‘n’ roll, you’re never too old if you’ve got the talent. In this BBC Two four-part series, they form two rival bands of musicians over the age of 64 and get them to rock out the main stage of the Isle of Wight Festival. It’s then up to the crowd of 65,000 to decide which band they love the most. You can find out what happens on catch up on iPlayer. Do take a look. You will see scenes from Sunbury as they visited Richard at his home. A local resident who lives in Richard’s road had told me the funny story of asking Martin Kemp to move his car as he was parked outside her house! So, rockers and Sunbury really do go hand in hand.
