Desborough Sailing Club (DSC), based in Ferry Lane, Shepperton, celebrated it’s 73rd Birthday on Saturday 4th September with a Birthday Party held on the lawn at the club’s lovely riverside setting.
Originally conceived at a meeting in The Warren Lodge Hotel in 1948, DSC began life based at D’Oyly Carte Island. In 1953 it moved to it’s present location and has since gone from strength to strength.
During the Covid pandemic many people have looked for locally based activities and the club’s riverside location, facilities and warm welcome gave them the opportunity to learn to sail. Some members also bring their kayaks and paddleboards. The Club’s membership has increased by over 100 in the last year with individuals, families, and the whole of the Sunbury Skiff & Punt Club (as previously reported in Shepperton Matters).
The DSC Birthday Party began with a drinks reception to welcome new members and to give them the opportunity to meet the Flag Officers and existing members.
There was also a display of historical material from the club archive, some of which has been donated recently by a lady who was a member in the 1960’s and ‘70’s. This includ-ed posters, pamphlets, photographs and mem-bership lists dating back to 1948, which proved to be of great interest.
DSC has grown into a thriving sailing club and is always open to new membership enquiries on membership@desboroughsc.org
