Village Matters

Spelthorne Dementia Support

From humble beginnings we started our small group of 6 members that was 3 dementia members and their carers.

We were offered to use the main hall in the Greeno Centre which has over the years ac-commodated so many of us having amazing get together.

We are now having to consider how we can accommodate everyone ,keeping safe but hav-ing some get togethers whether in smaller groups, but we are all missing seeing and meeting up with each other .So many good friendships have been forged and still being kept alive with the help of FaceTime and phone calls. We are like 3veryone at this time trying to work out a solution.

We are asmall group of volunteers who during Covid have kept in touch and visited when allowed trying also to help new members we have not been able to socialize with us.

It is very stressful for mature of us having being diagnosed with this disease and living on their own or having to deal with a loved without family support.

Wevhave been very lucky to have the support of Peggy Pickering and her Shepperton based art group who have raised money for us over the years also they have made and donated Christmas gifts for all our members, this year is no different than last year.

Spelthorne Dementia Support with the assis-tance of the Runnymede Hotel deliv-ered ‘Afternoon Tea’ at the very beginning of the first lockdown, also we raffled a afternoon tea for a member and a carer to be enjoyed as soon as this lockdown is over. The Rotary Club and Silver Linings provided ‘Boredom Bags’ which had all sorts of activity items in them.

We have also been lucky enough to have been supported by the Harlequins Foundation from Twickenham Rugby Ground. they arranged and had delivered a parcel to our members from ‘The Jolly Hog Roast Company’. Deli-cious meals were enjoyed by some of our lucky members .

Our weekly mini lockdown concerts are still running with some members having a go with learning some of the online dances sent out.

We are always looking for volunteers for when the lockdown is over .A few retired gents with time on their hands would be great.Your commitment can be as much or as little time that you may have. A good listening ear and kindness is necessary..

Stay safe everyone ,hoping to Meet Again soon.

We wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas and a Healthy 2021
